What Is Heart Disease

Heart Disease is more than just Heart Attacks and Strokes. Here are the most common heart disease
1) Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
The most common heart disease afflicting Malaysians, Coronary Heart Disease (CAD) typically involves a blockage in the arteries supplying blood to the heart. This blockage is usually caused by a build-up of fat or calcium deposits in the vessel walls, constricting the movement of blood flow. Common symptoms of these are chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, persistent coughing, nausea, etc.

2) Congestive Heart Failure
Heart Failure is the hearts inability to efficiently pump blood throughout the body. Often describes as a weak heart, blood circulation is optimal to meet body’s needs. This can lead to increase fluid retention especially in the lungs, abdomen, legs as the heart cannot pump the water out efficiently. Common symptoms include a gradual reduction in stamina, shortness of breath, swelling of joints, nausea, etc.

3) Arrhythmias
Arrhythmias are irregular heartbeat rhythms. The heart can either beat too slow or too fast. Bradycardia is a low heart rate of < 60bpm in adults at rest. Tachycardia is high heart rate of > 100bpm at rest. These can be caused by a lack of electrolyte levels, thyroid conditions, lifestyle and fitness, stress, diet, etc. Common symptoms are restlessness, chest pain, shortness of breath, inability to sleep, blurry vision, fatigue, fainting spells, etc.

4) Valvular Heart Disease
Valvular Heart Disease occurs when one or more of the hearts valves fail to control the flow of blood through the heart. This can lead to blood flow restrictions, blood flowing backwards and leakages. Most Valve issues are birth defects that can develop, but some can be due to injuries. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, swelling, fatigue, dizziness, etc.

5) Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy is the thickening or thinning of the heart muscles. Both of which make it difficult for the heart to pump blood. Most cases are congenital and can be fixed with surgery.

The Stats: Worsening Trends for Heart Disease for Malaysians

In 2021, there were 66,779 deaths in Malaysia due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
The crude CVD mortality rate for Malaysia was 210 per 100,000 population (2021).
In 2022, ischaemic heart disease (a type of heart disease) accounted for 16.1% of all medically certified deaths in Malaysia, which is 20,322 deaths.
There’s a trend: in 2000, IHD caused about 11.6% of all deaths; by 2020, this had risen to 17.0%.
According to Kosmo, treatment of heart disease in Malaysia costs are substantial: RM 3.93 billion is spent on heart disease care out of a total health budget cited in that source.
From a research perspective, a 2025 BMC Public Health study estimated that 3.6 million Malaysians (aged ≥ 30) are at high risk of CVD in the next 10 years (21.4%).
The average age for coronary angioplasty (a heart procedure) in Malaysia is ~57 years, which is much younger compared to some developed countries (e.g., Japan: 71 years).
